There are places in the world that feel like postcards.
And then there are places that feel like you accidentally stepped into another dimension.

Los Arcos National Marine Park is the second one.

Just off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, these massive stone arches rise out of the ocean like something ancient and watching.
Beneath them? A protected marine sanctuary. Not metaphorically. Literally.
This place has been under protection since the 1980s, which means the ocean life here isn’t shy, starving, or scattered.

It’s thriving.
And you feel that the second your face hits the water.
The Descent
At first, it’s quiet.
You float. You breathe.
Then slowly, the fish start to appear.
Not one or two.
Dozens.
Then hundreds.

They move like glitter with purpose, flashing around you, completely unbothered by your existence. You’re not the main character down here. You’re just… visiting.
The Tofu Test
They give you this soft, crumbly bait. It looks like tofu, feels like tofu, and apparently turns you into the most popular person in the ocean.
You break off a small piece and hold it out.
A few fish dart in.
Cute. Manageable. You’re still in control.
So you get a little braver.
You break off another piece… and hold it closer to your body.
More fish.
Closer.
More confident.
Fish are rubbing up against you and the movement of the ocean is swaying you into each other.

You start thinking, okay, I’m basically a sea whisperer now.
The rhythm of the ocean has you and a cloud of fish sweeping back and forth across the Ocean.
It’s absolutely Surreal. You are One with Nature. You are the Goddess of the Sea. These nibbling fishies are your besties.
This is where the ocean humbles you.
The Mutant
Out of nowhere, a fish the size of your arm comes in like it has somewhere to be.
And it doesn’t slow down.
It plows into you.
Not gently. Not politely. Not “excuse me.”
Full contact.
Glaring at you with these crazed beady eyes, and an underbite like a werewolf!
And this thing—this absolute unit—has the most massive forehead you’ve ever seen. Like evolution just decided, you know what this one needs? More head.

Time freezes for half a second.
Then instinct kicks in.
You flinch, inhale wrong, question your life choices, and immediately remember that you are not, in fact, built for aquatic street fights.
The fish? Completely unfazed.
Turns. Targets. Comes back at you.
Tofu is sacrificed.
You escape.
Barely.
The fish
Gone.
Probably judging you.
The Shift
I come up sputtering, trying to play it cool while internally filing an assault report against a fish.
Nope. We’re done here.
I kick it into full escape mode, convinced Fivehead fish is somewhere below me assembling his crew for a coordinated attack.
I’m swimming like I owe the ocean money. Maybe fifteen feet. Maybe a mile. Hard to say when your survival instincts are driving.
The travel guide pops up beside me.
“Everything okay?”
“Yep. Ya. Love it. Beautiful.”
I immediately look away to hide the most obvious lie ever told.
My boyfriend swims over, casually asking if I want more tofu like we’re not in an active marine ambush.
I take it.
Because apparently I learn nothing.
The second it hits the water, the swarm returns. Instant chaos. Zero hesitation.
I sacrifice the tofu like an offering to the sea gods and make my exit for the boat.
And that’s when I know—
I had an incredible time.
But I also cannot unsee that bulging side-eye, underbite, prehistoric-size forehead coming straight for me.
Acting like I had eaten it’s child with a side of fries.

My thoughts.
Snorkeling at Los Arcos isn’t peaceful in the way people sell it.
It’s better.
It’s unpredictable. It’s immersive. It’s slightly chaotic in the best way possible.
And at some point, if you’re lucky, you might get lightly assaulted by a fish with a fivehead and walk away thinking:
Yeah… I’d do that again.
But for the love of God, just be careful passing out the tofu.
You’re not on the top of the food chain down there.
Sincerely,
Beautifully Dangerous
